Advanced Level Apprenticeship

We are looking for an apprentice to join the Planning Team at Blaby District Council. The Team process and make decisions on over 1,000 planning and related applications in Blaby District every year.  It is an exciting time to join us as we make decisions on where new homes should be built, enable businesses to grow and develop and help to facilitate the delivery of the infrastructure needed by communities.

The apprenticeship is aimed at anyone looking for their first position in town planning. The apprentice role will involve:

Working in a team environment

Advising customers on planning matters, in writing and verbally

Responding to requests for information we hold.

General administrative duties such as dealing with incoming and outgoing post and emails and answering phone calls

Updating our planning databases and geographical information systems

Keeping our website up to date.

Assisting with the processing of planning applications, including carrying out site visits


You will study for NVQ and BTEC Level 3 Diplomas in Town Planning Technical Support at Moulton College, Northamptonshire. Each module will be delivered by block release over a rolling two year period.

We are looking for someone who:

Has an interest in a career in town planning

Is quick and keen to learn

Enjoys working in a supportive team environment

Recognises and appreciates the value of providing excellent customer service

Is a good communicator with good numeracy skills

Is reliable and punctual

Has knowledge and understanding of IT including word processing, spreadsheets, databases and the internet.


Desired qualifications

Five GCSEs grades A to C / 4 to 9 (or equivalent) including maths and English

The qualification you will study for has been developed in association with the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI). All apprentices can become free student members of the RTPI.  Following completion, there may be the potential to progress to Chartered Membership of the RTPI through Higher Education or by completing sufficient work experience.


Things to consider

You need to be able to travel to and attend Moulton College in Northamptonshire for 6 weeks each year, spread throughout the year. To assist with college attendance there could be the option to stay in Moulton College’s onsite overnight accommodation during the block college weeks (note: accommodation only available for over 18s).
