Trainee Accountants

Location: City Hall

Full Time, Fixed Term Trainee Contract for 3 years, from September 2017 until August 2020

Leicester City Council is a major local authority providing a wide range of services and spending over £1bn per year.  It plays a major role in city life, involved in everything from caring for the elderly and disabled, protecting vulnerable children and promoting public health to collecting refuse, running schools, maintaining the city’s roads and managing over 20,000 homes.  It develops regeneration projects, and has invested substantially in the city’s infrastructure in recent years.

The city has benefitted hugely from this investment, and from the international interest created by the discovery of King Richard III.

At the same time, the Council faces unprecedented financial challenges.  Our funding from the Government is being reduced each year, and we need to make sure that we adapt and change whilst still providing the best possible services to the people of Leicester.

The role of the Council’s finance department will be crucial.  We need to ensure we have the right managers and leaders in the future.

We are offering opportunities for two talented, ambitious graduates to train with us.  The successful candidates will complete a programme of work placements in different sections of the department, enabling them to learn all aspects of financial management.

Successful candidates will study for the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) qualification.  Further information about CIPFA can be found on this link:

The successful candidates will work on real projects, learn from a range of experienced professionals and take on more challenges as they progress.

If you:-

then we would be delighted to consider your application.

Start date: 1st September 2017 to 31st August 2020 (three year contract).

At the end of the training programme, we hope to offer successful trainees a permanent position, at a qualified accountant’s salary.  Most former trainees have since forged successful careers; some have gone on to become directors of finance.

The Council operates a generous pension scheme, with pensions based on career average earnings.
