The Council’s award-winning Erewash Museum has an exciting opportunity for a highly skilled and motivated self-starter with an eye for commercial opportunities to lead their Culture and Heritage Team within the Wellbeing and Culture Service.

The Opportunity:

Based at the award-winning Erewash Museum in Derbyshire, the Culture and Heritage Team Leader is a key role within the Wellbeing and Culture Service and will support delivery of the council’s corporate ambitions relating to culture, heritage, arts, health and wellbeing. The council is looking for an individual who can support in driving these ambitions and sustaining the services for the future.

Erewash Museum has some key milestones on the horizon including reapplication to Arts Council England’s Museum Accreditation Scheme and the development of their Forward Plan. Working with the Service Manager and museum team, the role will be responsible for the day-to-day operations at Erewash Museum ensuring there is sufficient resource to operate effectively. This will include leading a team of staff and volunteers with a requirement to work Saturdays on rotation. The council’s ambition for their Wellbeing and Culture Service is to provide opportunities for residents relating to culture, arts and heritage whilst improving their health and wellbeing, and having fulfilling experiences through its key asset at Erewash Museum.

About You:

You will be a true leader within the Museum, Culture and Heritage Sector with a wide breadth of knowledge relating to the delivery of cultural and heritage services, so a degree in a relevant field or equivalent relevant industry-based experience is required. Experience of leading cultural or museum projects together with experience of leading a team and completing work rotas is essential.

You will lead on exhibition programming which will be delivered by the team, direct collections management and working with the Heritage and Collections Officer ensure there is effective documentation and conservation of the council’s collection, therefore experience and understanding of exhibitions, conservation methods, Spectrum standards, and Modes is required. The Museum is also becoming more sustainable through its commercial offer such as the new Dalby House Café and education programme, therefore an individual with an eye for expanding on commercial opportunities in the museum sector is ideal.

The successful candidate will work with the Community Health and Wellbeing Team Leader to ensure there is cross collaboration between the services. Other duties will include developing and delivering the council’s Volunteer Policy that will underpin the museum’s volunteer operations, so knowledge of leading volunteer operations is essential. You will oversee the museums event staff effective planning and delivery of the museum events programme, including on funded programmes, therefore experience of demonstrating effective monitoring and evaluation of projects and securing external grant funding is essential. The ideal candidate will have an adaptable and flexible working style including excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to communicate professionally and effectively at all levels.
