Technical Officer

This is an excellent opportunity to join the successful Joint Environmental Health Service which delivers services across the rural districts of both Bolsover and North East Derbyshire District Councils.

A typical day may include:

• Investigating a complaint about poor living conditions in privately rented properties;
• Dealing with an allegation of a property being used as an unlicensed House in Multiple Occupation (HMO);
• Investigating a complaint about a barking dog or noisy neighbours;
• Attending court to apply for a warrant to silence a burglar alarm;
• Investigating a complaint of rubbish accumulating in a garden;
• A complaint about a vulnerable resident living in a heavily hoarded property.

As a Technical Officer you will work with other Environmental Health Professionals investigating a wide variety of housing and public health service requests. You will take enforcement action when necessary to deal with illegal activity and offences such as serious housing hazards, noise nuisance and unauthorised encampments.

The post is based within the Housing & Public Health Team of the Joint Environmental Health Service, but you will also work with our partner agencies at Derbyshire County Council, Derbyshire Police, Derbyshire Fire and Rescue, Community Safety, Building Control, Planning Officers and Engineers.

Whilst previous enforcement experience and a qualification in housing or building related studies would be beneficial, alternatively transferrable skills and a willingness to undertake additional relevant training will be necessary.  A large part of the role is the ability to communicate effectively and having good customer care and IT skills.  You will need a full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle for work purposes.

You will be supported by experienced Environmental Health Officers and Technical Officers within the Housing & Public Health Team, who will provide guidance and mentoring as you develop your knowledge and skills. Appropriate technical training in housing and public health matters will also be provided to support your professional development and help you progress within the role. This is an excellent opportunity to gain practical experience across a wide range of housing and public health issues whilst working as part of a knowledgeable and supportive team.
