We are looking for a Principal Building Surveyor to join our team of property professionals who look after Derbyshire’s diverse portfolio of buildings, including schools, libraries, care homes, offices, and historic assets. You will also support work across our industrial portfolio and land assets, offering a varied and rewarding opportunity to contribute to essential Council services.
Reporting to the Head of Property Maintenance, you will lead a multi‑disciplinary team of Senior Surveyors, Surveyors and Technical Experts, delivering a high‑quality maintenance management and advisory service for the Council’s property stock. This is a key role in supporting the delivery of our Property Asset Management Strategy and helping to shape the future of Derbyshire’s estate, including heritage buildings such as those within the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site.
You will bring substantial experience in surveying and building maintenance disciplines, as well as the enthusiasm and leadership required to manage people, projects, and programmes of work. You will ensure that statutory compliance activities and maintenance schemes are delivered on time, within budget, and in line with all relevant legal and regulatory requirements.
The role involves engagement with a range of internal and external customers—including service departments, schools, senior managers and Members—requiring excellent communication, negotiation and relationship‑building skills. You will also contribute to financial planning, costing, and reporting, ensuring value for money and effective service delivery.
We can offer you a supportive and flexible working environment, a diverse and interesting workload, and opportunities for career development at an exciting time for the Council. If you’re looking to broaden your professional experience, Derbyshire provides the variety and challenge to help you grow.
