Do you want to help residents recycle more, reduce waste and make a visible difference to Chesterfield’s environment?

Chesterfield Borough Council is looking for an enthusiastic, organised and community-focused waste services officer with a focus on recycling to join our waste services team.

About the role
In this practical and rewarding role, you will work with residents, council colleagues, community groups and contractors to improve recycling quality, tackle contamination and support better waste services across the borough.

What you will be doing

  • work with the Council’s waste collection contractor to tackle recycling contamination and refuse bin misuse
  • monitor kerbside recycling and garden waste collections to help improve service performance
  • resolve enquiries and complaints, keep accurate records and support clear reporting
  • inspire residents to recycle more and reduce waste
  • spot opportunities to improve services and increase the quality and quantity of recycled materials
  • support waste and recycling arrangements for new developments and help deliver small-scale improvement projects.

About you
You will be someone who enjoys working with people, can stay organised in a busy frontline service and is motivated by practical environmental improvement. You will bring confidence, flexibility and a positive approach, along with experience in customer service, presentations or public engagement, and good IT skills.

What we are looking for

  • five GCSEs at grades A* to C, or equivalent, including Maths, English and ICT
  • a full clean driving licence
  • strong organisation, communication and problem-solving skills, with the ability to prioritise effectively
  • confidence building positive relationships with residents, community groups and partner organisations
  • experience in customer service, a busy office environment or delivering presentations
  • knowledge of waste management, local government experience, or relevant waste, IT, marketing or publicity qualifications would be desirable
